Introduction

Shanghai University is one of the major universities in Shanghai directly under the jurisdiction of the Municipal Government and one of the 100 key institutions of higher learning the Chinese Central Government will construct in the national “211 Project”.

 

Founded in October 1922, Shanghai University has developed into a comprehensive university with a variety of disciplines including science, engineering, liberal arts, history, law, fine arts, business, economics and management. The University consists of 28 colleges or schools and 1 independent department, offering 71 undergraduate majors, 176 Master’s degree programs, and 82 doctoral degree programs. It has a high-quality faculty of more than 2800 full-time faculty members among whom 1315 has obtained doctoral degree, 10 are members of the Academy of Sciences of China and the Academy of Engineering of China,472 are full professors and 874 are associate professors.

 

Shanghai University has more than 100 research institutes or research centers. In the last five years, its total research fund has ranked the 20th or so and the number of its academic research papers collected by SCI, EI and ISTP has ranked the 30th or so among all the universities in China. At present, Shanghai University has 4 key subjects of the Ministry of Education, namely, Ferro-Metallurgy, Mechanical and Electronic Engineering, Fluid Mechanics, and Sociology; 22 key subjects of Shanghai municipality, including Mechanical and Electronic Engineering, Applied Mechanics, and Communication and Information Engineering; 4 superior subjects of Shanghai municipality, namely, Ferro-Metallurgy, Applied Mechanics, Advanced Robot and Modern Manufacturing System, Study of Metropolitan Society; 5 characteristic subjects of Shanghai municipality, namely, Communication and Information Engineering, Advanced Material Manufacturing and Applications, Instrument and Electric Automation, Information Physics, Environmental Pollution and Human Health. Besides, there are 2 national key laboratories, namely, Modern Metallurgy and Material Manufacturing and Special Photo-conductive Fiber and Network, 1 key laboratory of the Ministry of Education, that is, OLED and Application Integration, 1 characteristic subject of the Ministry of Education, that is, Material Composition and Advanced Dispersion Technology. There are also 2 key research bases of Shanghai municipality in the areas of Humanity and Sociology.  

 

Shanghai University is a key talents training base for Shanghai municipality. In October 2003, Shanghai University was one of the first universities whose undergraduate education was appraised by the Ministry of Education to be excellent. Its current student body totals around 36900, of whom over 24600 are undergraduates, about 10200 are graduates, and about 3200 are higher vocational students. In addition, there are more than 11000 students receiving adult education.

 

Shanghai University has carried out extensive international exchange and cooperation with scores of foreign universities so far. Four Confucius Institutes have been established in foreign countries, that is, Phuket Confucius Institute of Prince of Songkla University in Thailand, Confucius Institute of University College of Cork in Ireland, Confucius Institute of Bosphorus University in Turkey, and Confucius Institute of University of Kentucky in USA.

 

Shanghai University is one of the first universities granted the permission by the Ministry of Education to enroll international students. It began to admit international students in 1966, and since then more than 20000 international students from 124 countries have studied in the university. There are on campus approximately 3000 long-term international students. Among them, there are 520 Degree-Seeking students. The College of International Exchange is in charge of the enrollment and administration of international students, offers Chinese language programs and provides logistic services for international students. Besides, the College is also in charge of coordinating Confucius Institute Affairs, developing exchange students programs with universities from different countries and Sino-foreign cooperative education programs. At present, the College is one of the 56 council member units of the Society of Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language and one of the institutions appointed by the National Office for Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language (NOTCFL) to dispatch Chinese language teachers abroad. The Chinese as a Foreign Language Teaching and Research Center of the College has a faculty with high professional quality and rich teaching experience. All the teachers have obtained the qualification certificate of an instructor of teaching Chinese as a foreign language. The College has established a course system combining long-term courses with short-tem courses and diploma education with non-diploma education. In September 2003 the College began to offer the undergraduate (the degree of Bachelor of Arts) program of Chinese language, which consists of two modules, namely, Chinese for Economics and Trade and Chinese Language and Culture.
